How to get there?

By road: The only way to get to Bac Kan is by road from Hanoi via Thai Nguyen Province which is around 160km, but it takes around 4 hours. Local bus is available from My Dinh bus station. However, to visit Bac Can tourists normally combine with other destinations such as Ban Gioc waterfall in Cao Bang province, Dong Van rock plateau in Ha Giang. Therefore, booking a private 4X4 wheel drive with driver and tour guide is advised.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Bac Kan is during dry season from October to December when it is cool. July to September is also a good time to see green rice paddy fields along the way, but sometimes, it can be rainy.

There is nothing to see in Bac Kan town, but Ba Be lake and national park are famous and picturesque destinations in this province.

Ba Be Lake

The main highlight of Bac Kan travel packages is the Ba Be lake which means three lakes. You will want to know that it is the biggest lake in the country.  The Lake surrounding has natural fortification of limestone hills. It will take more than 5 hours from Hanoi to reach the lake area by road. Unlike other lakes, this lake is full of water throughout the year round.

The Ba Be Lake is among the top 20 most beautiful lakes in the world recognized by UNESCO and it is very wonderful to kayak to explore this lake. However, the lake is too big so the the motor-boat is the best way to discover the Ba Be.

Be Be National Park

Ba Be National Park is another interesting tourist spot in Bac Kan. The park formed in 1992 and spread over an area of 100.48 square kilometers. The Phiabyior range on the southwest valley of the national park has a height of more than 1,500 meters. The limestone and lowland evergreen forests are two kinds of vegetation found in the park area.

Some of the species found in the park include Francois' leaf monkey, Owston's civet, Chinese pangolin, Tonkin snub-nosed monkey, slow loris, stump-tailed macaque and rhesus macaque.  Species like Asian black bear, European otter, François' langur, mainland serow, Asian golden cat, particolored flying squirrel, red giant flying squirrel, and hairy-footed flying squirrel add up the natural wonders waiting for you here.
More than 10 villages surround the park, which consists of more than 3,000 people.

Accommodation

It is worth visiting Ba Be lake and national park in a 2-3 day tour packages, but there is no luxury hotel there. The best option for accommodation is to stay at a homestay with a Tay family in Bac Ngoi village that lovely situated by bank of the Ba Be lake. The homestay is simple, but clean, comfortable and it is a great opportunity to experience the local life, culture and take part in their daily activities like farming or fishing in the Ba Be lake.
