Catch a show of the traditional Apsara dances said to be over 1,000 years old. The apsara is performed by women in a tight-fitting traditional dress with graceful, sinuous gestures which are codified to narrate classical myths, religious stories or particular meaning. For example, a finger pointing to the sky indicates “today” while standing sideways to the audience with the sole of the foot facing upwards represents flying.

4. Taste Khmer cuisine
Khmer cuisine or more generally Cambodian cuisine is one of the world’s oldest living cuisines, focusing on simplicity, freshness, seasonality and regionalism. Often overlooked to tourists by Thai and Vietnamese food, but once you’ve sampled Khmer dishes, you may not want to turn back. For a start, try amok trey or steamed curried fish, a traditional dish of Cambodian cuisine. It is freshwater fish fillet covered with an aromatic kroeung (pounded shallots, lemongrass, garlic, and kaffir lime), roasted crushed peanuts, coconut milk, and egg and then wrapped in banana leaves and steamed until it achieves a mousse-like texture.

6. Hit the beach in Sihanoukville

If you’re too tired of historical and cultural sights then Sihanoukville is a perfect alternative. Also known as Kampong Som, it is a port city and beach resort on the Gulf of Thailand. Sihanoukville draws the crowds for its secluded beaches and tropical islands. Some of the most popular beaches are Ochheuteal, Sokha, Independence and Victory. The south and small tropical islands nearby remain quiet and unspoiled; you can take a boat to these islands for diving, snorkeling and fishing.

5. Ride in a tuk-tuk
There is no more authentic experience than riding in a tuk-tuk, an open air rickshaw pulled by a motorbike that serves as a taxi. It’s also the best way to get a feel for Cambodia and travel through towns with fast speed as a taxi but much cheaper.
