Vietnam Islam

Vietnam IslamIslam is mainly followed by Cham people, an ethnic minority group residing primarily in the Ninh Thuan province, Binh Thuan province, Ho Chi Minh City, An Giang province and other provinces in the Central and the South of Vietnam, but about one-third of the Muslims in Vietnam belong to mixed ethnic origins (Cham, Khmer, Malay, Minang, Viet, Chinese and Arab).

After Vietnam was reunified in 1975, most of the Muslim Khmer and Cham left the country. The rest only practice a watered down version of Islam. More specifically, they do not speak or read Arabic, drink alcohol, pray once a week (on Friday) and celebrate Ramadan for only 3 days (rather than a month).
